The Lagos State Police Command has recovered 36 vehicles suspected to have been stolen from within the state, other parts of Nigeria, and even outside the country. Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, shared this update during a press briefing at the command headquarters in Ikeja, where the cars and other recovered items were displayed.
According to the commissioner, the vehicles were traced to various suspects including fraudulent individuals, runaway drivers, and organized car theft gangs. Some cars were recovered while being moved across state lines toward international borders, likely for illegal export. Others had already been sold or hidden in locations around Lagos.
He explained that several of the stolen cars, worth hundreds of millions of naira, were taken by drivers trusted by their employers. Many were retrieved before they could be smuggled out of the city. An additional 70 vehicles remain under investigation in police custody.
Residents whose vehicles were stolen at gunpoint or taken by drivers have been asked to visit the command headquarters for verification. Jimoh emphasized that the police are determined to protect lives and property and warned criminals that Lagos would not be a safe space for illegal activities.
He noted that the newly formed Eko Strike Force, a unit focused on tackling high-risk crime zones, has grown from five to nine teams and is working closely with the Rapid Response Squad (RRS). He praised the public for their valuable tips and quick reporting, which have helped in many of the arrests and recoveries.
Although he didn’t specify how many suspects had been arrested, he confirmed that several firearms were recovered and that all suspects will be charged in court once investigations are complete.
