A diarrhoea outbreak has affected 81 students at Government Girls Senior and Junior Secondary School, Kawo, Kaduna State. The Kaduna State Ministry of Health confirmed the incident on Friday, revealing that 15 of the students were hospitalised.
The Rapid Response Team, led by State Epidemiologist Dr Jeremiah Diako, carried out an investigation and found that the affected students were between the ages of 16 and 17. They were promptly moved to the General Hospital, Kawo, for treatment. All hospitalised students have now been discharged.
To prevent future outbreaks, the ministry recommended a number of steps. These include improving how diseases are reported, setting up school-based health monitoring systems, training staff on food safety and waste handling, creating proper procedures for referring sick students, and preparing schools better for possible health emergencies.
Health officials stressed that putting these measures in place is crucial for student safety and to stop similar health risks from recurring.
