FG Housing Loan Board Targets Retired Civil Servants for Property Recovery Over Unpaid Loans

The Federal Government Housing Loan Board has started compiling a list of retired civil servants who owe outstanding housing loan repayments, with plans to recover mortgaged properties.

The Federal Government Staff Housing Loans Board (FGSHLB) has initiated the process of identifying retired civil servants who have failed to repay their housing loans in full. According to Mrs. Ngozi Obiechina, Head of Information and Public Relations, the board is working to compile a list of these retirees. This action, announced by the board’s Executive Secretary, Mrs. Salamatu Ahmed, seeks to recover mortgaged properties from those who have not met their loan obligations.

The decision follows a memo issued by Mrs. Patience Oyekunle, the Permanent Secretary of the Career Management Office at the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HCSF), reminding public servants about the requirement to obtain a Certificate of Non-Indebtedness. This certificate, which confirms the absence of any outstanding debt to the FGSHLB or the MDA Staff Multipurpose Cooperative Society, is necessary before retiring.

In the statement, Mrs. Ahmed emphasized that the board would pursue legal actions to reclaim properties, as outlined in the terms of the loan agreements. She also referenced the Public Service Rule 021002 (p), which mandates that public servants obtain the Certificate of Non-Indebtedness before they retire.

Mrs. Ahmed clarified that the board holds the legal right to repossess mortgaged properties if a public servant exits the service without settling their loan balance. This directive also applies to retirees who remain indebted. She urged all affected retirees to resolve their loan balances promptly to avoid complications.

The FGSHLB is currently compiling a list of such retirees, which will be forwarded to relevant regulatory agencies for debt recovery actions. The board reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring proper loan recovery procedures are followed.
