A Queen Remembered: Eleme Kingdom Reflects on a Year Without HRH Queen Njideka Appolus Chu

A moving ceremony marks one year since the passing of HRH Queen Njideka Appolus Chu, as the Eleme Kingdom honors her legacy of love, service, and compassion.

A deeply emotional memorial ceremony took place in Ogale, Eleme, Rivers State, to honor the one-year anniversary of the passing of HRH Queen Njideka Eugenia Appolus Chu, beloved wife of HRM King Appolus Chu, The Oneh-Eh Nchia X and The Egbere Emere 1 of Eleme Kingdom. The event, held at the royal palace, brought together a remarkable gathering of dignitaries, traditional rulers, government officials, political figures, religious leaders, and community members from across Rivers State and beyond. Their presence was a powerful testament to the love, respect, and admiration the late Queen inspired throughout her lifetime.

Queen Njideka was known for her deep compassion, remarkable generosity, and unwavering dedication to uplifting others. Her presence was felt in many areas of life—religious circles, financial organizations, and social groups—where she served with humility and purpose. Her efforts to build peace and unity made a lasting impact on the Ogale community and the Eleme Kingdom as a whole. She gave her time, wisdom, and energy to causes that mattered, leaving behind a legacy rooted in kindness and selfless service.

To reflect on her life and the void her absence has created, a heartfelt memorial book titled The Mystery of Death and the Grief That Comes With It was unveiled during the ceremony. Written by her husband, King Appolus Chu, the book captures the depth of his grief and the beauty of the life they shared. Excerpts from the book were emotionally delivered by the Queen’s daughter, Ajuri Appolus Chu, alongside other family members, painting a vivid picture of the woman she was and the love that surrounded her.

In a moving tribute, the Emir of Borgu Kingdom, HRH Muhammad Sani Dantoro, offered prayers for eternal peace, acknowledging the Queen’s peaceful life. Former Minister of Women’s Affairs, Pauline Tallen, also gave words of comfort, expressing hope that the royal family would find strength and healing in the months ahead.

King Appolus Chu shared his sorrow with guests, revealing how deeply he feels the loss of his beloved wife. He spoke of the statue erected in her honor as a way to preserve her memory and ensure her story is not forgotten. He described it as a structure built not just of stone, but of love, sorrow, and remembrance.

The statue, unveiled by a group of bishops and clergymen, now stands as a permanent reminder of the Queen’s contributions to her people. It is a symbol of the beauty she brought into the world and the difference she made in the lives of others. During the ceremony, wreaths were gently laid on her graveside, and a posthumous birthday cake was cut in her honor—a touching celebration of a life filled with love and meaning.

Ajuri, her only daughter, recalled the warmth and comfort of her mother’s presence, expressing how much she misses the way her mother cared for her and guided her through life. Her words touched many, reflecting the personal and collective grief that still lingers a year later.

As tradition dictates, the ceremony also marked the conclusion of King Appolus Chu’s mourning period. Yet, the memory of Queen Njideka lives on—in the hearts of her family, in the fabric of her community, and in the legacy she left behind. Her life, marked by grace and purpose, continues to inspire all who knew her. The love she shared and the lives she touched will remain her greatest legacy.
