A group of dedicated golfers and influential figures in Abia State are pushing forward with plans to develop a top-tier championship golf course in Umuahia, the state capital. This ambitious initiative is expected to position the state as a leading destination for golf tourism globally. The project is being championed by high-profile figures, including Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, Senator Nkechi Nwaogu, and Chief Emeka Wogu, Chairman of the South East Development Commission (SEDC).
On Tuesday, the group, known as the Abia Classic Golf & Country Club, took a significant step by forming a technical committee tasked with creating a detailed proposal and investment plan to present to the state governor. The forum includes both local and diaspora golfers with a shared goal of making this vision a reality.
The committee will be led by Benson Ezem, a well-respected architect and Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA), with Anthony Ezenwoko serving as Secretary. Ezem, who is also a key promoter of the project, emphasized the plan to build a golf course of international standard similar to the Lakowe Lakes Golf and Country Estate in Lagos. The planned development will span 308 hectares and include an 18-hole championship golf course, residential estates, and modern amenities, combining the traditional charm of a country estate with contemporary services.
In addition to designing the golf course, the committee will consult with government officials, investors, and local communities to ensure the project aligns with best practices in golf course and country club development. The forum’s creation is viewed as timely, given the current administration’s focus on fostering inclusive development in Abia. Ezem highlighted the forum’s role in promoting unity and a shared goal of developing Umuahia’s golfing infrastructure.
As part of their efforts, the forum has organized an “Awareness Maiden Golf Super Kitty” event on April 19, 2025, at the Aba Sports Club’s golf course. Governor Alex Otti has confirmed his attendance as the special guest of honor, and he will also participate in the tee-off. This event aims to further solidify the partnership between the Abia Classic Golf and Country Club and the state government, showcasing the potential of sports tourism to drive development.
