The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has assured its state chairmen that they remain central to the party’s future, denying rumours of exclusion amid ongoing leadership transitions. After a high-level meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, attended by all 37 state chairmen including the Federal Capital Territory, the party’s interim leadership reaffirmed its commitment to unity and collaboration.
Addressing journalists on Thursday, Interim National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi stated that the meeting aimed to dispel widespread rumours suggesting the national leadership was sidelining state leaders. “We didn’t come to take over or push anyone away,” Abdullahi said. “We’re here to work together and strengthen the party.”
Responding to comments by ADC’s 2023 presidential candidate, Dumebi Kachikwu, who criticised the coalition process as flawed, Abdullahi clarified that no rule was breached. “A presidential candidate is not an officer of the party. If anyone believes the constitution has been violated, they’re free to challenge us, but so far, no valid complaint has been raised,” he said.
He also addressed possible internal resistance, noting that some members might be reacting out of fear or misinformation. “We’re ready to engage with any aggrieved members,” he added.
Kingsley Ogga, Chairman of the ADC State Chairmen Forum, reinforced the message of unity, saying all chairmen were fully informed and involved in the coalition talks. “We were not left out. We support what is unfolding,” he said.
Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the FCT, also pledged her support to ADC, distancing herself from the divided Labour Party. “Which faction of LP should I remain in? The ADC offers clarity,” she said, stressing her commitment to the new team.
Lagos State ADC Chairman, George Ashiru, described the gathering as both a show of solidarity and a strategy session for the party’s future. He noted that the ADC is gaining traction at the grassroots level, attracting new members from major parties like the APC and PDP.
The leadership reiterated that their focus remains on building a united, forward-looking political force.
