The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly denied any intention to disrupt Nigeria’s democratic system, insisting that it remains committed to democratic values and peaceful political engagement. The party made this clear in response to a recent claim by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, who accused the opposition of planning to overthrow the government before the 2027 elections.
Bolaji Abdullahi, the Interim National Publicity Secretary of ADC, addressed the allegation in a statement released on Thursday in Abuja. He described the accusation as false and dangerous, accusing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of trying to silence dissent by framing political opposition as a national security threat.
Abdullahi said the ADC’s only weapon is the ballot, not bullets, and that the party’s goal is to offer Nigerians an alternative vision for the country’s future when the time comes. He expressed concern over the APC’s apparent intolerance for opposition, despite having once been an opposition party itself.
He urged President Tinubu to caution his aides against making inflammatory statements that could create unnecessary tension ahead of the next general elections. Abdullahi also encouraged Nigerians to resist any attempts to undermine opposition voices and democratic participation.
He reaffirmed the ADC’s dedication to building a better Nigeria through peaceful and democratic means, stressing that the survival of democracy depends on openness, competition, and respect for alternative viewpoints.
