Air Peace Secures Heathrow Slot, Abuja-London Flights to Begin October 26

Air Peace to launch direct flights from Abuja to London Heathrow on October 26 after Nigeria pushes UK to honor air service deal.

Air Peace will begin direct flights from Abuja to London Heathrow Airport on October 26, according to Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo. The announcement, made through a statement by his media adviser Tunde Moshood, marks a major diplomatic and commercial breakthrough for Nigeria.

Keyamo said the development came after strong diplomatic efforts to ensure fair treatment under international aviation agreements. He revealed that the federal government had sent a firm letter to the UK Secretary of State for Transport, Louise Haigh, on August 1, 2024, insisting that Heathrow landing slots be granted to Air Peace. The letter warned that failure to comply could lead to a review of access for British Airways and Virgin Atlantic at Nigerian airports.

He explained that the demand was based on Nigeria’s rights under the Bilateral Air Services Agreement with the UK, which provides for equal opportunities for both countries’ flag carriers. After months of back-and-forth, UK authorities agreed, finally clearing the way for Air Peace to operate from Heathrow.

Keyamo described the outcome as more than just a business win, calling it a strong diplomatic statement that Nigeria would no longer tolerate unequal treatment in international partnerships. He also linked the success to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which supports Nigerian businesses seeking global expansion.

This isn’t Air Peace’s first foray into the UK aviation market. The airline launched its Lagos–London Gatwick route in March 2024. However, gaining access to Heathrow—one of the world’s busiest and most important airports—is expected to elevate its global reach and offer Nigerian passengers more travel options.

Keyamo said the new route would deepen Nigeria–UK aviation ties and set a clear example for how the country intends to protect its carriers under bilateral agreements.
