Akpabio Hints at More Opposition Governors Set to Join APC Amid Tinubu’s Reforms

Senate President Akpabio reveals growing interest from opposition governors to join APC, citing Tinubu’s reforms and Uzodimma’s decade of achievements.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has indicated that several governors from opposition parties are preparing to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), signaling a potential realignment in Nigeria’s political landscape. Speaking on Tuesday in Owerri, the Imo state capital, Akpabio delivered a goodwill message during the launch of the book “Ten Years of Impactful Leadership of the APC Administration in Nigeria,” authored by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma. The event also featured the commissioning of key projects by President Bola Tinubu.

According to Jackson Udom, special assistant on media to the Senate President, Akpabio praised President Tinubu’s reforms over the past two years, suggesting that they have created an environment attracting governors from other parties. “Mr President, with what you have done in the last two years, get ready to receive more governors from the opposition parties. As I speak, there are several governors in Nigeria today that are ready to be received by you,” Akpabio stated.

Highlighting the positive reception of the reforms among Nigerians, Akpabio noted that ordinary citizens—including students, farmers, and businessmen—are beginning to feel the benefits of Tinubu’s initiatives. He emphasized that these outcomes are recognized firsthand by those directly impacted rather than merely being promoted by party officials. “If we say it, they will accuse us of rubber-stamping your achievements, but the beneficiaries are the ones talking about what you have done,” he added.

Akpabio also commended Governor Uzodimma for documenting his decade of governance, noting that genuine progress is reflected in tangible actions rather than words alone. “I thank Governor Uzodimma for deciding to put history in writing, in his 10 years of impactful leadership of the APC administration in Nigeria. Progressiveness is not in words; it is in action. The quality of work done by the governor is of high quality, and the people of Imo state must be very, very excited,” he said.

Reflecting on his own tenure as Governor of Akwa Ibom 18 years ago, Akpabio said his developmental initiatives already positioned him within progressive politics. He extended congratulations to Uzodimma and the APC national leadership, praising the party’s accomplishments over the past decade and framing them as a blueprint for continued national growth.
