Alhaji Aminu Dantata, one of Nigeria’s most influential business leaders, was laid to rest on Tuesday, June 1, 2025, at the Al Baqi Cemetery in Medina, Saudi Arabia, following funeral prayers at the Prophet’s Mosque, Masjid an-Nabawi. His death on June 28, 2025, closed a remarkable chapter in Nigeria’s commercial and philanthropic history.
Born on May 19, 1931, in Kano, Dantata hailed from the prominent Alhassan Dantata family, known for their strong legacy in trade and industry. From an early age, he was groomed in both Islamic values and business principles, starting his education at Dala Primary School and continuing in a private school established by his father.
Carrying forward his father’s entrepreneurial legacy, Dantata rose to national prominence through hard work, honesty, and business foresight. His ventures spanned major sectors including construction, oil and gas, banking, agriculture, and manufacturing—cementing his place as a pillar of Nigerian enterprise.
He was a founding board member of the Nigerian Industrial Development Bank (NIDB) and played a key role in post-independence economic missions that helped shape Nigeria’s financial landscape. However, his impact was not confined to business alone.
Dantata was a tireless philanthropist. He co-founded the Kano State Foundation, an endowment that has supported countless Nigerians, particularly in education and entrepreneurship. His humanitarian projects included the Alhassan Dantata Haemodialysis Centre at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, as well as the construction of schools, orphanages, mosques, and aid to widows and disadvantaged communities.
Despite his fortune and influence, Dantata was known for his humility and quiet generosity. His modest lifestyle and deep connection to his roots earned him admiration across Nigeria.
He also served in public office, notably as Kano State Commissioner for Economic Development, and was a member of the 1979 Constitution Drafting Committee, where he brought his business insights to national policymaking.
President Bola Tinubu paid tribute to Dantata, describing his death as a major national loss and praising his enduring contributions to Nigeria’s development and unity.
