Gunmen have killed a respected traditional leader in Anambra State, Ogbuefi Ozo Nnanyelugo, despite receiving a ₦15 million ransom from his family. The victim, a high-ranking member of the Nimo Royal Cabinet in Njikoka Local Government Area, was kidnapped from his farm by armed men who wore masks and caused panic among workers.
According to eyewitnesses, the farmhands ran for safety, leaving the chief defenceless. He was taken away at gunpoint while his family later struggled to gather and pay the demanded ransom. Despite meeting the kidnappers’ demands, the chief was murdered. His body, bearing deep machete cuts on the head, was found dumped in the same farm where he was abducted.
The killing has caused fear and anger in the community, with residents describing the act as cruel and unjustifiable. Security officers have sealed off the area, and investigations are underway, though the Anambra State Police Command has not released an official statement. Locals are urging the government and security agencies to arrest the killers and address the growing insecurity in the region.
