The North-Central APC Forum has strongly criticized the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction over its response to escalating violence and displacement across Plateau and other regions. The group pointed to ongoing attacks by armed herdsmen and bandits, which have claimed dozens of lives and left thousands homeless.
In a public statement signed by its Chairman, Alhaji Saleh Zazzaga, the Forum expressed disappointment in the performance of the current Minister, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda. According to the group, despite hailing from Plateau State—a region severely affected by the crisis—the Minister has not demonstrated any meaningful intervention since his appointment in October 2024.
They recalled that Plateau had no representative in the Federal Executive Council for eight months, during which the group advocated for a capable candidate. However, since Yilwatda took office, they claim there has been no noticeable federal support in the most affected communities.
Citing recent data from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Forum highlighted that at least 52 people were killed and over 1,800 displaced between March 27 and April 2, 2025, in Plateau State alone. Yet, Yilwatda has not visited the victims or the affected areas, even as gunmen have reportedly taken over 64 communities.
They contrasted his silence with the efforts of the Minister of State, Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu, who visited displaced persons in Bokkos Local Government Area in December 2024 and held meetings with local leaders.
The Forum further accused Yilwatda of allowing political grievances to influence his duties. They suggested that his past rivalry with Governor Caleb Mutfwang, who defeated him in the 2023 gubernatorial election, might be affecting his willingness to engage with the crisis.
The group emphasized that public service should rise above political differences, especially when lives and welfare are at stake. They urged the Minister to act urgently, take leadership in federal humanitarian responses, and fulfill the responsibilities of his office.
Their statement comes at a time of growing speculation over a possible cabinet reshuffle as President Bola Tinubu’s administration marks two years in office.
