Argentina Confirms Exit from WHO, Strengthens Health Ties with U.S.

Argentina officially exits WHO, boosting health cooperation with the U.S. amid criticism of WHO policies and plans to reform national health institutions.

Argentina has officially confirmed its decision to leave the World Health Organization (WHO) while announcing plans to deepen health cooperation with the United States. This development followed a visit by U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy to Buenos Aires, where he met with Argentine officials to discuss joint health initiatives. The withdrawal echoes a similar move once proposed by former U.S. President Donald Trump.

The Argentine government criticized the WHO’s approach, claiming its policies prioritize politics and bureaucracy over science. Argentina had earlier condemned the WHO’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, especially the strict lockdowns it called “caveman quarantine.” During Kennedy’s visit, he and Argentine Health Minister Mario Lugones agreed to work on improving transparency and trust within Argentina’s health system.

Kennedy, known for his skepticism about vaccines and controversial opinions, is expected to continue discussions with President Javier Milei. Recently, Kennedy urged countries at the WHO assembly to leave the organization, accusing it of being influenced by China, gender ideology, and pharmaceutical companies.

Alongside leaving the WHO, Argentina announced a major review of its national health institutions to modernize regulations, boost transparency, and address inefficiencies that have long affected the system.
