Following an emergency meeting held on Wednesday at its Lagos Trade Fair Complex headquarters, the Auto Spare Parts and Machinery Dealers Association (ASPMDA) has issued a firm directive aimed at tackling the sale of fake engine oil and auto parts. The association announced that any member found engaging in the distribution of adulterated products will lose ownership of their shops, buildings, or plazas.
This decision comes in the wake of a major operation carried out by the Department of State Services (DSS), during which a large volume of counterfeit engine oil was seized and several dealers were arrested.
ASPMDA President, Hon. Ngozi Emechebe, expressed deep concern over the impact of the DSS raid and the subsequent scrutiny faced by the association’s leadership. He stressed that members unanimously agreed to implement a zero-tolerance policy. Anyone involved in the sale of adulterated engine oil or spare parts will be expelled from the association and permanently barred from doing business in the market.
Emechebe also revealed plans to upgrade the association’s security system using training and modern technology to identify and track offenders. He reassured the public of ASPMDA’s continued reputation as the hub for genuine auto spare parts across West and sub-Saharan Africa.
Beyond eviction and forfeiture of shops, violators will be handed over to law enforcement for prosecution.
Adding his support, Chief Dr. Daniel Offorkansi, former ASPMDA president and current chairman of the Board of Trustees, condemned the resurgence of counterfeiters in the market. He called for collective efforts to protect ASPMDA’s image as a trusted center for quality products.
