Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar paid a touching tribute to his wife, Hajia Titi Abubakar, during her 75th birthday celebration in Abuja last weekend. The event, attended by close friends and political allies, highlighted their enduring love story. Atiku described Titi as a remarkable blessing to him and their family, revealing that their marriage over 50 years ago defied their parents’ objections.

The couple wed in a bold ceremony with only two friends present, without family support. Speaking at the celebration, Atiku expressed pride in choosing Titi as his wife, emphasizing her unwavering support throughout their journey.

Their son, Adamu Atiku Abubakar, a commissioner in Adamawa State’s Ministry of Works and Energy Development, also honored his mother. He praised her as a woman of strength, wisdom, and boundless love, calling her his greatest gift and a guiding force. Titi, a passionate advocate for women and children, founded the Women Trafficking and Child Labour Eradication Foundation (WOTCLEF).

Her efforts led to the creation of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP). Before marrying Atiku, a customs officer, in 1971, she attended Kaduna Polytechnic. Fluent in English, Yoruba, and Hausa, Titi converted to Islam after their marriage. In 1999, as the wife of the vice president, she launched initiatives to combat forced prostitution and human trafficking, cementing her legacy as a champion for the vulnerable.
