In Yenagoa, a political dispute escalated following a shooting incident at a rally organized by the pro-Tinubu group, NEW Associates. Gunmen opened fire at the event over the weekend, but security forces swiftly intervened, forcing the attackers to flee.
The Bayelsa State Government, led by Mrs. Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, the Commissioner for Information, condemned the attack and announced a formal investigation. The government also urged the Inspector-General of Police to identify and hold those responsible for the violence accountable.
However, the government also raised concerns about the rally’s location, which violated the Electoral Act by taking place on religious grounds, violating guidelines established by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Officials warned political groups not to involve religious sites in partisan activities, emphasizing that such actions disrespect sacred spaces. The government reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace and protecting citizens, stating that any religious institutions involved in illegal political activities would face penalties.
In contrast, NEW Associates criticized the state government, claiming frustration over their unsuccessful attempts to prevent the rally. Ebilade Ekerefe, the group’s secretary, accused the government of trying to sabotage the event, including efforts to stop venues from hosting the rally. Despite these challenges, Ekerefe praised the resilience of the rally’s supporters and the effectiveness of security forces in containing the violence. He commended both the security agencies and the group’s youth supporters for their bravery in ensuring the rally proceeded safely, despite the violent disruptions.
This ongoing disagreement highlights the deepening political divide within the state and the tense atmosphere surrounding political events in the region.
