Benue Security Forces Arrest Suspects Over Deadly Yelwata Attack

Benue police confirm arrest of suspects after gunmen stormed Yelwata, killing residents and forcing thousands to flee. Governor’s support credited.

Security forces in Benue State have arrested several individuals suspected of being involved in the recent deadly attack on the Yelwata community. The incident, which took place in the Guma Local Government Area, led to multiple deaths and forced thousands to flee their homes.

At a press briefing on Sunday, June 22, the state’s Commissioner of Police, Emenari Ifeanyi, confirmed the arrests but did not reveal the identities of those in custody. He praised Governor Hyacinth Alia for his support, saying the breakthrough would not have been possible without his intervention.

Emenari also noted that the deployment of officers ordered by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has been successfully carried out. Officers have been stationed in rural areas to improve security and prevent further attacks.

He called on landlords and hotel owners to screen new tenants and guests carefully to stop criminals from hiding in their properties.

The attack, believed to have been carried out by armed herders, left several residents dead and many others without shelter. Authorities continue to monitor the area as investigations progress.
