Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bode George, has declared that the party will not field a candidate from the North in the 2027 presidential election. Speaking during a gathering of the Lagos State PDP chapter to celebrate what members called the party’s revival, George warned that selecting a Northerner would dishonor the vision of the party’s founding fathers.
He described any attempt to jettison the zoning principle as a betrayal of the late leaders who built the party. George recalled that although the late Dr. Alex Ekwueme lost the PDP presidential ticket years ago, he remained loyal and did not abandon the party. According to him, this is the kind of commitment that should guide party members today.
George expressed concern over the ongoing wave of defections from the PDP, attributing the trend to alleged pressure from President Bola Tinubu. He claimed that Tinubu and his associates are pushing PDP governors to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), warning that such moves undermine democracy.
Reacting to the formation of a proposed coalition by former PDP members aiming to challenge the APC, George dismissed the effort, likening it to “rolling stones that gather no moss.” He predicted that those leaving the PDP would eventually return after failing to achieve success outside the party. “Can you abandon your father’s house because it has a leaking roof, only to live in a rented apartment?” he asked.
George urged Nigerians to stay vigilant, insisting that real political power lies with the people and not with those he accused of manipulating the system for their gain.
