Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, has paid glowing tribute to late President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a courageous leader who resisted internal pressure to weaken Nigeria’s legislative arm. Speaking in Abuja, Gbajabiamila said Buhari remained a strong supporter of the National Assembly throughout his time in office and shielded it from political interference.
Reflecting on their close working relationship during his tenure as Speaker from 2019 to 2023, Gbajabiamila recalled how Buhari consistently backed him, especially during moments when certain elements within the presidency sought to use the President’s influence to interfere with legislative independence. He noted that Buhari’s refusal to allow such tactics created an atmosphere of stability that helped the 9th Assembly focus on meaningful reforms and service to the people.
Describing Buhari’s passing on Sunday, July 13 in a London hospital after a brief illness as a devastating loss, Gbajabiamila expressed deep sorrow and called the late President a father figure and friend. He praised Buhari’s character, stating that the former President was known for his honesty, strength of will, and loyalty to the country.
He acknowledged that like every public servant, Buhari had his flaws, but stressed that his commitment to Nigeria remained unquestionable. He urged citizens to remember the former President for his contributions to national unity and growth.
Gbajabiamila also offered prayers and condolences to Buhari’s widow, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, the entire family, and the many Nigerians who admired the former leader. He encouraged everyone to continue working toward a united and prosperous Nigeria, calling it the most meaningful way to honor Buhari’s legacy.
“May Allah grant him Aljannah Firdaus and bring comfort to his family,” he concluded.
