Carpenter Sentenced to 30 Months for Defrauding Groom Ahead of Wedding

A Nigerian court has sentenced a 42-year-old carpenter just weeks before a wedding he disrupted with fraud. He has until April 22 to avoid prison by paying a fine and compensation.

A 42-year-old carpenter, Ado Ali, has been sentenced to 30 months in prison by a Jos Magistrates’ Court for cheating a man who was preparing for his wedding. The court delivered the ruling on Monday after Ali admitted to the crime. According to court proceedings, he accepted N500,000 from the victim, Kenneth Chollom, to produce a set of chairs and a bed frame for the upcoming ceremony. However, after receiving the money, he vanished without delivering the promised items.

Magistrate Shawomi Bokkos presided over the case and announced the judgment after the guilty plea. While sentencing Ali, she offered him a chance to avoid serving time behind bars by paying a N50,000 fine. In addition, she ordered that he must repay N600,000 to the complainant as compensation.

Inspector Ibrahim Gokwat, who prosecuted the case, stated that the matter was initially reported at the “A” Division Police Station on March 22. The charge brought against Ali was based on Section 421 of the Penal Code Law of Plateau, which deals with cheating and dishonest conduct.

The judgment serves as a reminder of how trust and financial responsibility can directly impact life’s most important moments, especially weddings.
