Carville Slams NYC Mayoral Candidate Mamdani for Refusing to Reject Controversial Phrase

James Carville criticizes NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani for refusing to condemn "globalize the intifada," a phrase linked to anti-Israel violence.

Veteran political strategist James Carville has strongly criticized New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani for refusing to denounce the phrase “globalize the intifada,” a slogan widely seen as supporting violence against Israel. Mamdani, a state assemblyman from Queens and a democratic socialist, recently became the Democratic nominee for New York City mayor. His win has sparked backlash from Republicans and even members of his party, who argue that his views are too extreme.

During an appearance on “The People’s Cabinet” podcast, Carville expressed frustration at Mamdani’s silence on the issue. When host Daniel Koh brought up Mamdani’s rising popularity and progressive ideas, Carville acknowledged that Mamdani’s focus on affordability reflects some of his own political beliefs. But he drew a sharp line at the candidate’s refusal to oppose the controversial phrase.

Carville noted that views on Israel are shifting, especially among younger Jewish voters, but said Mamdani’s silence on the matter was still hard to understand. “Just get it out your mouth,” Carville said bluntly, questioning why Mamdani continues to avoid rejecting the slogan. He suggested Mamdani’s academic background might influence his interpretation of the word “intifada,” but stressed that most people associate it with violence.

The phrase “globalize the intifada” is explained by the American Jewish Committee as a global call to rise up against Israel. The Second Intifada, which began in the early 2000s, included deadly attacks against Israeli civilians, including suicide bombings.

Carville said he was confused by Mamdani’s stance, especially since prominent Democrats such as Congressman Hakeem Jeffries and writer Jonathan Chait have publicly urged Mamdani to rethink his position. “This ain’t that hard,” Carville added, pointing to the clear discomfort others have shown about the issue.

Jeffries, who leads House Democrats and also represents New York, warned Mamdani that the phrase is unacceptable and that he needs to clarify his views. Jeffries also said Mamdani must prove that he is ready to tackle rising antisemitism in New York City—a growing concern for many Jewish communities.
