The US Senate has confirmed Charles Kushner, a real estate executive and father of Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, as the next US ambassador to France. The Senate vote ended with 51 in favor and 45 against his nomination.
Kushner, 71, has a controversial history. 2004 he pleaded guilty to tax evasion and other charges, leading to a prison sentence. However, he was pardoned by then-President Trump in 2020. Despite his past, Trump praised Kushner’s business leadership and philanthropy, calling him a strong advocate for US interests.
Kushner takes on this diplomatic role when US-France relations face challenges, largely due to President Biden’s trade policies. In addition to his position in Paris, Kushner will also serve as the US ambassador to Monaco.
