Maresca Defends Chelsea Progress Amid Criticism Over Team’s Performance

Enzo Maresca says Chelsea's season shows clear progress despite fan frustration and Champions League doubts.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has defended his performance this season, stating that the campaign should not be seen as a failure. He made the remarks in response to ongoing criticism over his conservative approach, especially with Chelsea’s position outside the Premier League’s top five and five matches remaining.

Maresca’s side currently sit sixth, two points behind fifth-placed Newcastle. The team’s recent record shows just six wins from their last 17 league fixtures, raising concerns about qualifying for next season’s Champions League. Although Chelsea secured a late 2-1 win over Fulham, the manager’s subdued reaction after the final whistle at Craven Cottage drew attention. Some interpreted his lack of celebration as a silent reply to supporters’ growing frustration.

Chelsea fans have repeatedly expressed displeasure with Maresca’s tactics, often booing the team during home and away matches. Still, the Italian coach has urged the public to judge the season within a broader context. He pointed out that Chelsea’s league position reflects an improvement from recent years, maintaining that the team has spent most of the season close to the Champions League places—something he views as progress.

When questioned about the heavy investments made since Todd Boehly’s consortium acquired the club in 2022, Maresca acknowledged the expectations but insisted that development is already underway. Chelsea, despite spending over £1 billion on new signings, has yet to win silverware in the post-Abramovich era. However, Maresca recalled how his squad was once just two points behind league leaders Liverpool earlier in the season, using this as evidence of potential.

He emphasized that those willing to observe closely can see that the club is on the right track. Speaking confidently, Maresca said Chelsea remains committed to restoring the club’s elite status and that ambition remains high across the team and management.

Addressing the fans’ reaction, Maresca admitted he understands their disappointment. He acknowledged that support was strong when results were positive, and accepts that mood shifts with performance. Nonetheless, he reaffirmed that progress takes time and believes Chelsea is moving steadily toward their goals.
