The family of Nigerian football legend Christian Chukwu has announced a new date for his burial. Originally set for August 22, 2025, in Enugu, the ceremony will now take place on Saturday, August 16, 2025. This change comes due to a scheduling conflict with the Nigerian Bar Association conference, which will be held in Enugu from August 22 to 28, 2025. Emeka Christian Chukwu Jr. issued a statement apologizing for any inconvenience caused by the change.
Christian Chukwu, a former captain of the Nigerian national team, earned 54 caps and scored five goals during his career. He captained the Green Eagles to victory at the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations on home soil. Later, he served as assistant coach during Nigeria’s second AFCON win in Tunisia in 1994, a tournament that also marked Nigeria’s first FIFA World Cup qualification. Chukwu helped coach the Nigeria U-16 team to a FIFA World Championship in 1985 and led the Super Eagles as head coach at the 2004 AFCON, where Nigeria won the bronze medal.
