The Congress of University Academics, CONUA, has emphatically stated its refusal to adopt strike as a tool for addressing grievances in Nigeria’s public universities, calling such actions counterproductive and damaging to the educational system. The union’s firm stance was highlighted in a statement released yesterday by its National President, Dr. Niyi Sunmonu, following a nationwide series of congresses held from September 18 to 24, 2025.
The statement underscored that the decision to reject strike action was reached after thorough consultations across the union’s branches, reflecting a consistent and overwhelming consensus. According to the union, past strikes have historically failed to produce sustainable outcomes, instead inflicting significant harm on students, parents, academic staff, and the broader educational infrastructure.
Dr. Sunmonu’s statement emphasized CONUA’s commitment to dialogue and collective bargaining, stressing that constructive discussions and peaceful negotiations remain the most effective means of addressing challenges facing university academics. The union also highlighted its appreciation for formal recognition from the Federal Government, noting that resorting to industrial action at this time would undermine the spirit of responsible engagement, particularly while dialogue channels remain accessible.
While CONUA acknowledged that some concerns overlap with those of other academic unions, the union maintained that its approach is uniquely centered on evidence-based solutions and proactive negotiation. It made clear that it would not engage in strike action over matters where consultation and engagement have not been fully achieved, reaffirming its dedication to reasoned advocacy and practical problem-solving.
Concluding the statement, CONUA reiterated that stability and a forward-looking culture of constructive engagement are essential for the growth of Nigerian universities. The union pledged to uphold its founding principles of academic responsibility, dignity, and collaboration with all stakeholders, aiming to ensure the long-term development and credibility of the nation’s higher education system.
