Court to Hear Contempt Charge Against Sen. Akpoti-Uduaghan Over Alleged Social Media Violation

Federal High Court to hear contempt charge against Sen. Akpoti-Uduaghan over alleged violation of court order related to social media post.

The Federal High Court in Abuja is set to address a contempt charge filed by Senate President Godswill Akpabio against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. This charge stems from a social media post allegedly made in violation of a court order. Justice Binta Nyako, who is presiding over the case, scheduled the hearing for Tuesday at 12 pm. She also indicated that she would hear Akpoti-Uduaghan’s own contempt charge against Akpabio and others, accusing them of disobeying a previous court order.

Justice Nyako had previously issued a restraining order on April 4, preventing all parties in the ongoing legal matter from engaging in media interviews or posting on social media regarding the case. The action came after Akpabio’s lawyer, Kehinde Ogunwumiju, SAN, raised concerns that Akpoti-Uduaghan was continuing to grant interviews about the suit.

Akpabio later filed a motion accusing Akpoti-Uduaghan of breaching the court’s order by sharing a satirical letter on her Facebook page. In a separate development, Akpoti-Uduaghan had earlier filed a contempt charge against the defendants for suspending her, which she argued violated an order from Justice Obiora Egwuatu, who had earlier barred any action from being taken until the case was resolved.

The senator’s legal battle involves multiple parties, including the Clerk of the National Assembly, Akpabio, the Senate, Senator Neda Imasuem, and the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Code of Conduct.
