A sweeping security operation in Kwara State has led to the arrest of more than 20 individuals believed to be involved in arms trafficking and aiding criminal groups. The arrests took place in Ifelodun Local Government Area during an intelligence-led crackdown coordinated by nearly 400 special security operatives deployed by the state government in collaboration with the Office of the National Security Adviser.
Sources confirmed that the operation is part of a wider plan to rid Kwara of criminal elements threatening peace in Ifelodun, Ekiti, Edu, Patigi, and other vulnerable border communities. Many of the suspects were reportedly caught with weapons and supplies meant for criminal gangs operating in the Babanla area of Ifelodun.
Ten of those arrested, along with recovered arms and ammunition, have already been transferred to Abuja for further investigation. The crackdown has also led to the release of several hostages who were being held by the criminals.
According to a senior government official, the operation is being extended to Edu and Patigi, while Eruku and adjoining areas have been sealed off to block escape routes into Kogi and Niger States. Security agencies from neighbouring states are also cooperating to track down fleeing suspects.
The state government reaffirmed its commitment to wiping out criminal hideouts and urged residents to promptly report any suspicious activity to security forces. This latest action follows recent statements by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, assuring citizens that no effort will be spared to restore safety and order in the region.
