Former NFL quarterback and current ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky has criticized the Washington Commanders for not extending wide receiver Terry McLaurin’s contract. During an episode of First Take, Orlovsky openly supported McLaurin, who has been staying off the field during training camp amid a contract dispute. He told viewers that McLaurin has been the only consistent positive for the franchise over the last several years, despite chaos around him.
The Commanders made an unexpected run to the NFC Championship Game last season, led by rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels and head coach Dan Quinn. But with McLaurin’s contract set to expire, the team reportedly isn’t willing to offer a salary comparable to top receivers like D.K. Metcalf, who recently signed a $32 million per year deal.
Orlovsky argued that McLaurin is essential to Washington’s offense and warned that losing him would undo the team’s progress. He compared McLaurin’s impact to elite receivers like Ja’Marr Chase, Justin Jefferson, and Amon-Ra St. Brown, saying few players influence winning like he does.
The 29-year-old wideout has posted five straight 1,000-yard seasons and finished last year with 1,096 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns. He also delivered in the playoffs with 227 yards and three scores. Although he’s present at team facilities, McLaurin hasn’t joined practice sessions while waiting for a new deal.
Orlovsky didn’t mince words. He believes Washington risks everything it gained last season if McLaurin isn’t on the field in 2025.
