Deion Sanders Says He’s Back as Health Questions Surface at Big 12 Media Day

Coach Deion Sanders brushes off health concerns at Big 12 media day, saying he's back and focused on preparing the Colorado Buffaloes for the new season.

Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders made it clear on Wednesday that his focus is on football, not his recent health issues. As reporters gathered at Big 12 media day, questions about Sanders’ health quickly surfaced. He had missed part of the spring and early summer due to an unspecified condition but told reporters he’s doing fine and returning to Boulder soon. Sanders didn’t share details but confidently said he’s “already back” and eager to meet new players and get the season started.

Despite his calm tone, Sanders has a medical history that raised public concern. He previously dealt with blood clots in his legs and underwent toe amputations in 2021, which kept him off the field during his time at Jackson State. On Wednesday, though, Sanders shrugged off any concerns, saying, “I’m not here to talk about my health. I’m here to talk about my team.” He added that he’s feeling good and is grateful for the blessings in his life.

Sanders recently signed a five-year, $54 million extension to remain with the Buffaloes. As his son Shedeur prepares for his rookie NFL season with the Cleveland Browns, Sanders will be focused on choosing a new starting quarterback. The competition includes Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter and Julian “Ju Ju” Lewis. Both were present at media day and shared excitement about the upcoming season. Salter noted that while contact with Coach Prime has been limited, everyone agrees his health should come first. “We want him to take his time and come back when he’s ready,” Salter said.

Despite the spotlight on his health, Sanders appeared upbeat and ready to lead. With media and fans watching closely, he continues to shift the conversation back to the team’s goals for the season.
