In a significant turn of events, Delta State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olufemi Abaniwonda, has ordered the refund of N500,000 that was illegally collected as bail for two men in the Oghara Division. This decision follows protests led by civil society organizations (CSOs) demanding the release of Mr. Henry Umukoro, a professional builder, and his colleague, Mr. Godfrey Jonah. The two men had been arrested without proper evidence and detained for days, sparking outrage and calls for justice.
The CSOs, including the Executive Director of the Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ), Rev. David Ugolor, mobilized in Asaba to demand the immediate release of the detainees. Their protest also focused on the wrongful collection of N500,000 for bail. Ugolor commended the police for responding positively, ensuring the men’s release, and ordering the return of the money that was unlawfully taken.
The controversy began on April 11, 2025, when Jonah was arrested by officers at the Oghara Division in connection with a mob action. Umukoro, trying to help his colleague, was also arrested despite no clear evidence linking him to the alleged crime. After paying the bail, both men were initially released but were rearrested on April 18, 2025, without any court order or formal charges.
Upon learning about the incident, the Commissioner of Police swiftly took action. He issued a query to the officer who took the money and ordered the refund. The two men have now been released, and no charges have been filed against them.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Bright Edafe, confirmed that the Delta State Police Command had already initiated steps to address the matter even before the CSOs arrived. He assured that justice would be served, and the appropriate actions would be taken.
