Troops from Operation Hadin Kai in Northeast Nigeria have killed dozens of Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists during a clash in New Marte, located in Borno State’s Marte local government area. The violent encounter came after militants recently overran a military base in Marte, forcing soldiers and residents to retreat. Reinforcements, supported by Governor Babagana Zulum’s visit, helped recapture the town.
The latest battle started early Tuesday at 1:35 a.m. Marte lies near the borders of Monguno, Dikwa, and Gomboru Ngala local government areas, close to the Lake Chad Basin—a region with porous borders that allow terrorists easy movement from the Sahelian zone. Joint land and air operations by Nigerian forces targeted the insurgents, killing an undisclosed number of them. The military engaged the attackers as they tried to infiltrate the area, forcing some militants to flee.
Two soldiers lost their lives during the operation, confirmed by the military in an official social media statement. The troops continue to pursue insurgents in the region to maintain security and stability.
