The Edo State Government recently discovered a brothel inside Ujuele Primary School, located in the Esan West Local Government Area. This was revealed by Eugene Okolosie, the state coordinator for the Protection of Government Property, during a press conference in Benin City on May 22, 2025. The government has since sealed the brothel and is working to address the issue in consultation with the governor.
In addition to the brothel, the state has successfully recovered more than 2,000 plots of land that had been encroached upon. Okolosie highlighted that over 150,000 houses across the state are illegally built on government land. He urged people interested in purchasing property to seek approval from the Edo Geographic Information Service to avoid falling victim to land grabbers.
The state has been dealing with extensive encroachment on public properties, including land belonging to public schools. Okolosie mentioned that Ambrose Alli University had also faced land grabbers, but the community helped the government recover almost 90 percent of the stolen land. He further explained that a section of land at Iyoba, which had been divided and sold, was under investigation, and there were concerns about a kitchen being built near a classroom.
In the past two months, the government has received over 3,000 complaints from communities about illegal land acquisition and has vowed to take action to recover these properties.
