Elder statesman Chief Adesunbo Onitiri has warned former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-governors Nasir El Rufai and Peter Obi to avoid actions and words that could destabilize Nigeria’s political environment as the 2027 elections approach. In a statement from Lagos, Onitiri urged these influential leaders to show restraint and act patriotically in their political dealings. He cautioned that rising political tensions risk undermining the country’s democratic stability.
Recalling his role in the 1993–1994 fight against military rule, Onitiri stressed that seasoned democrats cannot stand by while politicians create chances for anti-democratic forces to thrive. He highlighted the urgent need for unity amid the current economic and security challenges, calling on both the ruling APC and opposition figures to work together for Nigeria’s welfare.
Onitiri noted the federal government’s ongoing efforts to tackle inherited problems since 2023 and emphasized that cooperation, not division, is crucial. He specifically criticized Atiku’s reported attempt to involve an American court to disqualify President Bola Tinubu from the 2027 race, calling the move “unnecessary and unacceptable” to many Nigerians.
He concluded by urging the opposition to allow the President to focus on governance and delivering results, reminding all committed democrats that the people’s struggle with hunger and insecurity requires united action, not heated political rivalry.
