Emergency Rule Threatens Benue and Zamfara amid Unrest

Amid rising unrest in Benue and Zamfara, the House of Reps summons governors and lawmakers to justify their actions or face an unprecedented takeover.

The House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions has summoned the governors of Benue and Zamfara, alongside their Houses of Assembly leadership, to answer critical questions about the ongoing crises in their states. A hearing is set for Thursday, May 8, where they must explain why their responsibilities should not be taken over by the National Assembly. This step follows escalating violence and instability that have plagued the regions.

The summon stems from a petition by the civil rights group, Guardians of Democracy and Rule of Law. The petition accuses the governors of failing to address security issues effectively and urges the National Assembly to intervene in the situation. The group contends that continued inaction has worsened killings and other crises in the states.

Mike Etaba, the Chairman of the Public Petitions Committee, emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and allowing all sides to present their cases. According to a statement by the committee, the governors and lawmakers are aware of the allegations and need to confirm their readiness to protect peace and order. The committee stands firm in ensuring that Nigeria does not descend into chaos.

The official notice, dated April 30, 2025, calls on the summoned representatives to attend the meeting with both hard and soft copies of their briefs on the matter. Warning of potential repercussions, the notice highlights that failure to appear could result in decisions being made in their absence. The hearing will take place at the House of Representatives, Room 429, New Wing.

Concerns over governance and security remain high as Nigerians closely watch the outcomes of this pivotal meeting. With the possibility of emergency rule being declared in both states, the gathering could mark a turning point in addressing unrest in these troubled regions.
