Nigerian filmmaker Destiny Omon, based in Ghana, says the entertainment industry has played a significant role in reducing crime across Nigeria. He shared this view while addressing the press about his upcoming film, Badagry, which is set to premiere in Benin City, Edo State, on July 4, 2025.
Omon credited Nollywood, comedy skits, and other forms of creative work with helping keep young people off the streets and out of trouble. He explained that many would have resorted to petty crimes if not for the opportunities created by the entertainment industry. According to him, “If not for the entertainment industry, people would have been stealing pots of soup to survive.”
He urged the government to do more than provide funding. Instead, he recommended support through access to essential equipment, such as cameras, lighting, and sound tools. “These can be made available to those with strong ideas but limited resources. Let them bring their scripts; the government can support production with tools,” he said.
Badagry features a strong cast, including Alex Osifo, Yemi Black, Jude Orhorha, Destiny Omon, Nike Adams, and Christian Alex. Omon revealed that about 70% of the cast and 90% of the crew are from Edo State, where the movie was also filmed in March. The project received support from the Edo State Government and the Edo State Waste Management Board.
The film tackles sensitive topics such as drug abuse, kidnapping, prostitution, and armed robbery. Omon, who has spent nearly 20 years in Ghana’s film industry, maintains that Nigeria remains one of the largest markets for African cinema.
