Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the revered Awujale of Ijebuland, was buried on Monday at his private residence in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State. The 91-year-old monarch was laid to rest following traditional rites in a quiet but highly respected ceremony that drew dignitaries from across Nigeria.
The burial was attended by top political figures, royal chiefs, and well-known personalities, including Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, ex-Governor Gbenga Daniel, business tycoon Aliko Dangote, and Fuji legend Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as K1 De Ultimate.
Oba Adetona, who became king in 1960 at just 26, ruled Ijebuland for 64 years—one of the longest reigns in Nigerian history. Known for his firm stance on justice, his efforts to preserve cultural identity, and his push to modernise the Ijebu kingdom, he remained a symbol of strength and reform until his final days.
Though the burial itself was a private affair, residents of Ijebu Ode and neighbouring communities turned out in large numbers to honour their king. Many described him as a fearless leader who upheld tradition while embracing progress. His name, they said, would be remembered for generations.
Born on May 10, 1934, Oba Adetona became a voice for traditional institutions and played a key role in promoting the interests of the Ijebu people at both state and national levels. His passing is seen as the close of a remarkable era in Yoruba royalty.
The Ogun State Government is expected to unveil a series of commemorative events in his honour in the coming days.
