A farmer, Kabiru Kamba, made a shocking discovery on his farmland in Kamba, Dandi Local Government Area of Kebbi State, when he found a newborn baby girl buried alive. The incident happened on Friday, June 27, 2025.
Kamba explained that while working on his farm, he noticed an unusual mound that stood out from the regular ridges. His curiosity led him to ask passing motorcyclists to help dig it up. As they dug, they uncovered a wrapper, which raised an alarm. He immediately alerted the police at a nearby checkpoint. When officers arrived and continued digging, they found the baby girl wrapped in cloth, alive and crying.
Kamba said he took the baby into his care out of compassion, stressing that it was simply a humane response. The Dandi Local Government Council temporarily handed the child over to him pending the outcome of police investigations. Coincidentally, his wife had just given birth, so feeding the rescued baby wasn’t a challenge. He shared that the naming ceremony has already been scheduled for Wednesday, and he has purchased a ram and other items for the event.
His wife welcomed the child warmly, saying she would raise her as her own.
On Monday, June 30, a delegation from Kebbi State’s Technical Working Group on Gender-Based Violence visited Kamba at his home to commend his actions. Hajiya Rafaatu Hammani, a former Permanent Secretary in the State Ministry for Basic and Secondary Education, led the group.
During the visit, Hammani assured the farmer that the matter would be brought to the attention of the Governor’s wife, Hajiya Zainab-Nasare Idris. The group’s Secretary, Alhaji Nasiru Idris, praised the farmer’s quick action and thanked God for the child’s survival. He also assured that support would continue while efforts to find those responsible remain active.
The team donated essential baby supplies, including clothes, diapers, soap, powdered milk, a mosquito net, and a mattress. The police are still investigating to find and prosecute the person behind the attempted murder.
