Seyi Babalola reported for The Sun Nigeria that Ayodele Fayose, former Governor of Ekiti State, has stated that governors under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are more inclined to support President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) than align with their party’s former presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
Speaking during an interview on Politics Today, a political programme on Channels TV, Fayose dismissed the proposed coalition involving Atiku as ineffective from the start. He described it as “a dead horse,” and questioned its credibility, asking for the name of anyone with strong political standing who has backed it.
Fayose pointed to a recent PDP Governors’ Forum meeting in Ibadan as evidence of internal resistance against Atiku. He claimed the gathering sent a clear message that the governors are not on Atiku’s side and are determined to maintain their independence. He suggested that the coalition idea was merely an illusion, driven by individuals who hoped to bring it to life without real backing.
According to him, PDP governors are prioritizing their own political futures and survival strategies. He believes they see more advantage in aligning with President Tinubu than rallying behind Atiku. Fayose added that pretending there is a functioning coalition would be misleading, stating that neither Peter Obi nor Atiku is likely to support the other.
He also highlighted the number of defections from the PDP compared to the APC, arguing that the internal issues within the PDP are pushing members away and need urgent attention.
