FBI and DEA Seek 90-Day Extension to Release President Tinubu’s Alleged Drug Investigation Records

FBI and DEA request an additional 90 days to release records related to President Tinubu's alleged drug case after missing the May 2 deadline.

A recent update reveals that the long-anticipated release of records by the FBI and the DEA concerning an alleged drug investigation involving President Bola Tinubu has been delayed. Initially set for release on May 2, 2025, the documents will not be made public as planned. On May 1, both agencies filed a joint status report with the court, requesting an additional 90-day extension to complete their searches for the requested records.

This case stems from a lawsuit filed by U.S. transparency advocate Aaron Greenspan in June 2023. The lawsuit, made under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), aims to secure investigative documents from U.S. federal agencies related to a 1990s drug trafficking and money laundering operation in Chicago. The case allegedly connects Tinubu and others to the drug ring.

Court documents reveal that Greenspan filed 12 separate FOIA requests directed at various U.S. agencies, including the FBI, DEA, IRS, and CIA. These requests sought information about four individuals, Tinubu, Mueez Akande, Lee Andrew Edwards, and Abiodun Agbele, all linked to the alleged criminal activities.

In their recent filing, the FBI and DEA explained that they need additional time to process the documents. The agencies stated they are searching for non-exempt records related to the plaintiff’s requests and expect to finalize their searches within the next 90 days.
