Fear and Fury in Badagry as Alleged NURTW Harassment Sparks Public Outcry

Residents of Badagry raise alarm over alleged NURTW harassment, extortion of okada riders. Calls mount for urgent government and police intervention.

BADAGRY — Growing unrest has gripped Badagry Local Government Area of Lagos State following widespread complaints of harassment and extortion targeting motorcycle (okada) riders by individuals reportedly posing as members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).

On Wednesday, July 16, a group of men said to be led by a man known only as Gbadebo allegedly invaded multiple okada parks across the Mowo–Ado-Odo stretch, including Pheragu, Iyana-Logbo (Igborosun), and Ikoga. According to eyewitnesses and victims, the group demanded ₦5,000 from each rider—both commercial and private—without offering receipts, identification, or any official documentation.

One victim, Manoah Kikekon, recounted how his motorcycle was seized. “They asked for ₦5,000 with no reason or paperwork. No IDs, nothing. One rider was slapped, and another was dragged on the floor. We’re just trying to make a living,” he said.

Another rider, Muyiwa, who was moving farm produce at the time, explained how he was stopped and accused of being a commercial rider despite his explanation. “They took my keys and wouldn’t return them until I paid ₦5,000. It’s unfair and unlawful,” he said.

Reacting to the incident, Alhaji Abdulganiu Muyibi, NURTW Chairman for Ikoga Zone and Senior Adviser to the Badagry Local Government Chairman on Revenue Matters, denied any connection between the union and the alleged attackers. He stated that the operation was unsanctioned, and he had already reported the matter to the NURTW headquarters for investigation.

However, his response has done little to calm the situation. Residents say such acts of intimidation have become a regular occurrence, especially on market days, often happening without any visible intervention from security personnel.

Local leaders and community members are now urging the Lagos State Government and the Nigeria Police to step in before the situation spirals out of control. A youth leader in Pheragu warned that the community’s patience is wearing thin. “If this keeps happening, people might be forced to defend themselves. We need the government to step in now,” he said.

As of the time this report was filed, no official statement had been issued by the Lagos State Government.
