David Uzoma Kamalu, also known as ‘M-Kaze,’ was killed during a police operation in the early hours of May 25, 2025. Officers from the Rivers State Police Command stormed a hideout in Rumuodogu 1, Emohua Local Government Area, acting on weeks of intelligence.
Kamalu, who had been declared wanted for multiple crimes, including kidnapping, armed robbery, and the brutal beheading of a local vigilante leader in January, reportedly opened fire when officers arrived. A shootout followed, resulting in his death. Other members of his gang escaped, some with bullet wounds.
Police found weapons and charms at the scene, including a pump-action shotgun, live cartridges, and local amulets believed to be used for intimidation and self-protection.
The Police Command’s spokesperson, Superintendent Grace Iringe-Koko, identified Kamalu as a key figure behind several high-profile crimes along the East-West Road. His criminal group had instilled fear among residents and travelers. A bounty had earlier been placed on him by local authorities.
Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju praised the officers involved in the raid and assured residents that operations would continue until all remaining gang members are caught. He also appealed to the public to report anyone with suspicious injuries or behavior to security agencies.
Investigations are ongoing.
