The Federal Government has taken a significant step to improve safety on Nigeria’s inland waterways by donating a large number of life jackets to the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA). The presentation took place at LASWA’s headquarters at the Five Cowries Terminal in Lagos. This move reflects the government’s strong commitment to developing a safe and efficient water transport system, especially in Lagos, known as Nigeria’s busiest waterways hub.
The donation aims to support LASWA’s ongoing efforts to promote life jacket use and enhance safety for all waterway users. During the event, officials demonstrated how to properly wear life jackets and launched a public awareness campaign on water safety. This campaign involves close collaboration with the Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), the Marine Police, and the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy.
This partnership between federal and state agencies underscores the shared goal of making Nigeria’s waterways a safe and reliable option for transportation, easing pressure on roads while protecting lives.
