The Federal Government has clarified that it will not invest any public funds in setting up a national airline. Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, made this clear in a message posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) account. He explained that while the idea of a national carrier remains on the table, it will only happen through viable proposals from private or public entities, local or international.
Keyamo noted that the government’s role is not to fund such a project but to provide the right policy environment that supports and strengthens existing Nigerian airlines. He emphasized that the current focus is on building policies that help domestic airline operators grow and survive in a competitive market. According to him, any future plans for a national carrier must clearly benefit the country and its people.
This update comes amid ongoing public interest in Nigeria’s aviation sector, especially after the controversial efforts of the past administration to launch Nigeria Air. Keyamo’s statement reflects a shift towards encouraging private sector involvement, aligning with broader goals of cutting government spending and boosting competition in the aviation industry.
