France will ban smoking in all outdoor places where children might be present, including beaches, parks, bus stops, and school surroundings, starting July 1. Health and Family Minister Catherine Vautrin announced this new rule on May 29, emphasizing the need to protect children’s right to breathe clean air. The ban applies to public gardens, sports venues, and areas outside schools to stop students from smoking nearby. Violators will face fines up to 135 euros ($154). However, smoking will still be allowed on cafe terraces, and electronic cigarettes are not included in the ban. France has already banned smoking in many indoor public spaces like workplaces, airports, and playgrounds. Around 35% of French people smoke, which is higher than the European average of 25%. This move follows years of increasing restrictions to reduce tobacco use in public.
