At least four people lost their lives and many others sustained injuries in two separate attacks on communities in Agatu and Apa Local Government Areas of Benue State. The incidents occurred around 5:30 p.m. on Monday. One of the attacks took place along the Odugbeho-Ogbaulu Road in Agatu, where a man identified as Sunday Dutse was killed. Dutse, a native of Odejo and younger brother to a former council chairman, had previously fled his home after an invasion by armed herders. He was reportedly living in Ogwule-Kaduna when he was ambushed and shot dead while travelling on the road.
The second attack happened in Apa LGA, affecting Edikwu Icho community and Ugbokpo town. Armed herders were said to have ambushed and killed two youths in Edikwu ’Icho, and shortly afterward, another young man in Ugbokpo. The incidents have caused widespread fear, forcing many residents to abandon their homes during a season meant for farming. Attempts to contact the state Police Public Relations Officer, Udeme Edet, for confirmation and comments were unsuccessful as of press time.
