Residents and commuters along the Obinze-Ihiagwa-Nekede road in Imo State are expressing frustration and concern as the once vital access route deteriorates rapidly. The road, plagued with deep potholes and sections flooded with water, has become nearly impossible to navigate. A construction company tasked with repairing the road has blocked the main route, forcing vehicles, including large trucks, to divert through the Umuanunu village road. However, this alternative route has also worsened due to heavy rain and overuse.
Prince Amanze, a staff member at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), warned that the road’s condition is not only an inconvenience but also a security risk. He recalled a time when this stretch of road became notorious for kidnappings. With stagnant water now covering parts of the road, even pedestrians find it difficult to pass through.
For many, the deteriorating condition of the road brings back painful memories. Chukwudi, a former FUTO student, expressed his heartbreak over the neglect of the road, noting that the situation has only worsened since his time at the university. He recalled the initial optimism when Governor Hope Uzodimma began work on the Otamiri River bridge during his first term but said that hope has faded as the road continues to deteriorate.
Local leaders, including James Achogbuo, President General of Umuanunu Obinze Autonomous Community, have raised alarm over the impact on their village. He warned that if the government fails to take immediate action, they will restrict vehicle access to the road, including that of FUTO staff, to prevent further damage to the already deteriorating infrastructure.
