Governor Mutfwang Urges Tougher Security Action After Plateau Killings

Plateau Governor Mutfwang visits attacked communities, demands new security tactics after 27 killed in fresh violence, promises justice and support for victims.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has urged security agencies to review their strategies and take firmer action following a deadly attack that claimed 27 lives in Bindi Community, Sopp, Riyom Local Government Area. He made the call on Wednesday during a visit to the grieving community after the attack, which occurred around 3:00 a.m. on Tuesday.

The assailants, believed to be armed gunmen, also destroyed homes, farmland, and property worth millions of naira during the early morning raid. Deeply pained by the scale of the destruction and loss, Governor Mutfwang said he was disappointed that such an attack could still take place despite available intelligence beforehand.

He emphasized the need for a complete overhaul of current security approaches, stressing that lives must be protected with urgency and resolve. “It’s unfortunate that even with prior intelligence, this attack still happened,” he said. “Our security agencies must step up. We cannot go on like this. With God’s help, we’ll put an end to this soon.”

The governor ordered the immediate identification and arrest of those responsible, declaring that the era of hiding behind the label of “unknown gunmen” must come to an end. “These killers must be caught. They will serve as an example to others involved in such crimes,” he said, urging the security forces to act decisively. “You are not here to keep peace; you are here to defend the people. Anyone threatening lives is an enemy of the state and must be treated as such.”

Governor Mutfwang also appealed to the affected residents to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring them of government support. He promised that proper burial arrangements would be made for the victims and aid would be provided to those who lost homes and belongings in the attack.

The youth leader of the community, Mr. Ezekiel Davou, thanked the governor for his visit, describing it as a morale boost for residents. He confirmed that eight hamlets were hit during the assault and called for immediate help in rebuilding efforts. Davou stated that despite the attack, villagers had resolved to stay and protect their land.

The governor also extended his condolence tour to Gwareng and Bachi communities within Riyom LGA, which had similarly faced recent attacks.
