Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has announced a N10,000 gift to workers in the state to celebrate May Day. The announcement was made during the Workers’ Day event in Abakaliki on Thursday, which was marked by the theme “Reclaiming the Civic Space amid Economic Hardship.” Nwifuru acknowledged the vital role of workers in the government, referring to them as the “engine room” of the administration. He pledged continued support for their well-being, emphasizing that workers will remain a symbol of excellence under his leadership.
In his speech, Nwifuru expressed gratitude for the workers’ contributions to nation-building and reiterated his administration’s commitment to addressing their challenges. He promised to foster a better working environment and civic space for the workforce in Ebonyi and called for unity and collaboration to achieve progress in the state.
At the event, leaders from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), including Prof. Ogugua Egwu and Mr. Chidi Igboji, praised Nwifuru for implementing the N75,000 minimum wage. However, they also raised concerns about delays in providing shuttle buses for workers at the state secretariat and called for more housing projects due to the high cost of rent. Additionally, they requested an increase in retirees’ pensions and improvements in government office facilities.
The governor assured the workers that their demands would be addressed as part of his administration’s ongoing efforts to improve their living and working conditions.
