How Saheed Osupa Quietly Saved Portable from Rearrest over ₦6.3 Million Performance Scandal

Fuji legend Saheed Osupa intervenes at the last minute to stop singer Portable’s rearrest in Ilorin over a ₦6.3 million fraud case tied to a missed performance

Musician Habeeb Okikiola, better known as Portable, narrowly avoided a second arrest in Ilorin on Tuesday, shortly after his release from the Okekura Correctional Centre. Unknown to him, plans had already been made to rearrest him over an alleged ₦6.3 million fraud linked to his failure to perform at an event organized by Starwood Hotels and the Kwara chapter of the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN). The event was held at the Starwood Hotel’s O2 Arena on September 29, 2024.

Sources revealed that Portable had been paid in advance for the show but failed to honour the agreement. According to a petition dated July 22, 2024, Portable was contracted to headline the “Kwara TAMPAN Fiesta” but did not appear at the venue on time. Despite showing up over 16 hours late, he reportedly left the premises without performing, sparking outrage among organizers and supporters.

Tensions escalated when he was first remanded on Monday, with the situation allegedly orchestrated by supporters of Fuji musician Saheed Osupa. Individuals who were initially ready to meet Portable’s bail conditions reportedly withdrew their support on Osupa’s sympathisers’ instructions. The decision was said to be a reaction to Portable’s previous public criticism of the Fuji star, which many considered disrespectful.

However, when the threat of a fresh arrest loomed over Portable, he reached out directly to Saheed Osupa to apologize. His apology, followed by multiple pleas, prompted the Fuji musician to intervene behind the scenes. Saheed Osupa’s involvement changed the course of events.

Yemi George, Managing Director of Starwood Hotels, confirmed that the rearrest plan was already in motion and backed by the necessary legal documents. He disclosed to journalists that he had been persuaded by Osupa not to proceed with the arrest, out of respect for the veteran artist. George stated that despite the financial and reputational loss his company suffered, he chose to honour Osupa’s request.

The petition, signed by TAMPAN Governor Chief Olu Amusan and Starwood Hotels’ representative Ayodele Demokun, accused Portable of collecting ₦6.3 million under false pretenses. The document called for investigation, legal action, and full reimbursement.

Adding to the controversy, the Kwara State Police Command confirmed Portable’s initial arrest in connection with a separate petition submitted by Saheed Osupa. The petition reportedly accused Portable of criminal defamation, incitement, character assassination, and threats to life.

Though Portable has been spared another round in custody, the fallout from the missed performance continues to stir public attention and industry reactions.
