HURMA Urges Speaker Obasa to Prioritize People’s Welfare Following Court Ruling

HURMA urges Lagos Speaker Obasa to use his reinstatement to focus on representing the people, especially the poor and marginalized citizens of Lagos.

The Human Rights Monitoring Agenda (HURMA), a prominent human rights and anti-corruption group, has appealed to the reinstated Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly (LSHA), Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, to reshape his leadership and ensure more inclusive representation for Lagos’ poor and marginalized citizens. In a congratulatory letter, HURMA commended the recent court ruling that overturned his impeachment, highlighting the need for Obasa to use his second chance in office to focus on public welfare.

The letter, signed by HURMA’s Executive Director, Comrade Buna Olaitan Isiak, acknowledged the Ikeja High Court’s decision that ruled in Obasa’s favor. The court found that his right to a fair hearing was violated, as he was not allowed to defend himself during the impeachment process. Justice Yetunde Pinheiro also declared that the January 13 sitting, which led to his impeachment, was not properly constituted and violated the Nigerian Constitution.

While celebrating Obasa’s reinstatement, HURMA emphasized that it was an opportunity for him to reflect on the events that led to his impeachment and take steps to lead more effectively in the future. The group noted that many were dissatisfied with his previous leadership style, including members of the Lagos State House of Assembly and the public. HURMA called on Obasa to move beyond political turmoil and focus on the welfare of the people he serves.

The letter further urged the Speaker to avoid seeking revenge and instead use his leadership position to uplift the suffering citizens of Lagos. HURMA also condemned the actions of lawmakers involved in the impeachment, claiming they were driven by personal political ambitions rather than the public interest. The group reaffirmed its commitment to supporting actions that promote true democratic representation and inclusivity for the underserved communities of Lagos.

HURMA pledged its full support for any initiative from Obasa’s office that prioritizes the welfare of the masses and fosters inclusivity within the state’s political landscape.
